Experienced NHS leader to become Chair of Southern Health

We've notified Southern Health that we intend to appoint Tim Smart as Chair of the trust, following the resignation of Mike Petter.

Update: 5 May 2016

Southern Health has appointed Tim Smart as its Interim Chair. This follows action we took last week in response to serious concerns raised by the Care Quality Commission.

We'll work closely with Tim, who takes up his post today, to determine if further regulatory action is needed. Tim's early priorities are to make sure:

  • the quality and safety of the trust's services improve
  • the Board functions more effectively

29 April 2016

We're proposing that Tim will join Alan Yates, who was appointed as Improvement Director at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust earlier this year.

Tim's proposed appointment at the top of the organisation will speed up the dramatic change that is needed urgently at Southern Health.

Tim has been the Chief Executive of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for seven years and has extensive experience of leading major NHS organisations. It's planned that he'll lead a review into the capability and capacity of the trust’s current leadership.
