Independent review into The Royal Wolverhampton's handling of staff concerns

Following concerns raised by a member of staff at The Royal Wolverhampton, the NHS Trust Development Authority (now part of NHS Improvement) commissioned Verita to carry out an independent review into the trust.

The independent review looked to establish:

  • if the trust acted appropriately and followed due process in handling the concerns raised by an employee
  • if its investigations were robust and whether the findings were reasonable based on the evidence

What the review found

After a thorough and detailed investigation, the review concluded that the trust’s handling of these concerns was significantly flawed and the employee was not treated fairly.

What we're doing

We're now commissioning an independent team to conduct a governance review of the trust to ensure a dedicated and focussed examination of a number of governance issues, which were identified during the course of the independent review. Investigating these matters was outside of Verita’s terms of reference.

The team will include input from senior NHS leaders to:

  • make sure the issues are considered by peers as well as external reviewers
  • make use of the extensive experience for improvement that exists within the NHS

What the independent review will do

The independent review will:

  • assess the trust's approach and culture around governance
  • identify any areas of good practice - as well as actions - to ensure the trust has a strong management culture with a positive approach to good governance

The independent review will make use of experienced leadership from within the NHS to ensure that the trust gets the best advice on making any improvements that may be necessary.

It's expected to consider evidence from external and regulatory assessments, survey results and interviews with internal and external stakeholders.
