Long-term partner needed to improve services at Colchester Hospital

NHS Improvement and the Care Quality Commission recommend a long-term partnership between Colchester and Ipswich hospitals.

A long-term partnership between Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust and The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust is the only way of securing services for patients long into the future.

This recommendation comes jointly from the Care Quality Commission’s Chief Inspector of Hospitals, Professor Sir Mike Richards, and our Chief Executive, Jim Mackey.

The arrangement offers Colchester Hospital a better route to bring about the improvements that patients urgently need to see.

About the trust

The preliminary findings of a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission show that services at Colchester Hospital, which has been in special measures for more than two years, are not of the required quality.

Without a long-term partnership with Ipswich, the trust risks being placed under the Trust Special Administration process.

Next steps

We'll work closely with the leadership of Ipswich and Colchester to set up the partnership which will see staff with clinical and leadership expertise work across both organisations.
