New chief executive appointed

Ian Dalton CBE has been appointed as the new chief executive of NHS Improvement on a permanent basis.

Ian has an exceptional track record with over 30 years’ experience in the NHS and the wider health sector. He joins us from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust where he is Chief Executive Officer.

Ian has held a number of senior provider, regional and national NHS roles throughout his career including Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO at NHS England and Chief Executive of NHS North of England, the North East Strategic Health Authority and two acute hospital trusts.

Ian will start on 4 December 2017.

I am delighted that Ian will be joining us as our new chief executive.

Ian brings with him considerable experience at provider, regional and national levels in the NHS. His focus will be to develop NHS Improvement further so we can continue to improve how we support NHS providers and local systems to deliver the best possible care for patients.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Jim Mackey for the enormous and invaluable contribution he has made in his two years at NHS Improvement. He has been an outstanding leader and I wish him the very best for his return to Northumbria Healthcare.

Dido Harding, Chair of NHS Improvement

The NHS is one of the best healthcare systems in the world and delivers excellent outcomes for millions of patients. However these are challenging times for the NHS and I want to play a full role in helping providers across the country respond effectively for the benefit of patients and local communities. I bring much valuable insight with me from Imperial College Healthcare as well as from my time leading a range of other NHS organisations.

NHS staff are incredibly committed and hard-working and I am looking forward to ensuring we at NHS Improvement do all we can to support them to deliver sustainable high quality care to their patients.

Ian Dalton
