Changes to data submission process for NHS Safety Thermometer

We’re phasing out the email data submission process to improve the NHS Safety Thermometer tools and website. By April 2018, providers who submit ‘Classic’ data via email will be asked to use a new online upload function, which will improve Safety Thermometer responsiveness.

Find out more about the change and book onto upcoming WebEx tutorials by contacting or 0300 123 6260.

New guidance on off-shoring and cloud computing

NHS Digital has published national guidance setting clear expectations for health and care organisations who want to use cloud services or data offshoring to store patient information.

This guidance, developed with Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England and NHS Improvement, will enable you to benefit from the flexibility and cost savings associated with cloud facilities, and to be compliant with forthcoming changes to data protection legislation (from May 2018) which put strict restrictions on the transfer of personal data.

Find out more about the new guidance and how it can benefit you.

Model Hospital: 2016/17 clinical service lines data and updated operational productivity pay metrics

We’ve now updated all clinical service lines on the Model Hospital with 2016/17 reference costs and electronic staff record (ESR) data. We’ve also made changes to the pay cost per weighted activity unit (WAU) metrics within ‘Operational Productivity’ and the ‘Opportunity Scanner’. Metrics generated using ESR data should now reflect more closely what you will see in local systems.

The Model Hospital is an online information tool available to all NHS providers to help identify productivity opportunities, through comparing productivity to the national average and to your peers.

Visit Model Hospital to view the update, and give us your feedback.

Successful early adopters for our imaging transformation programme

We’re delighted with the level of interest from imaging networks who want to be part of our imaging transformation programme as an early adopter. Early adopters will work with us to test and improve ways of delivering imaging services. The successful early adopters are:

  • The Cumbria and North East Imaging Group
  • Norfolk Acute Hospitals Network
  • Devon STP Imaging Network
  • Cheshire and Merseyside Network

The early adopters recently attended a workshop to share ideas and plans to date, identify common challenges, engage with peers and develop innovative solutions.

We’ll harness the enthusiasm of everyone who submitted expressions of interest by inviting them to a National Imaging Network sharing event on Wednesday 18 April 2018 (more details to follow).
