Use of synthetic mesh/tape: recommendations and actions
Following the recent national ‘pause’ on the use of synthetic mesh/tape to treat stress urinary incontinence and urogynaecological prolapse where the mesh is inserted through the vaginal wall, a Mesh Pause Clinical Advisory Group (CAG) was established.
On Friday we wrote to medical directors and surgical teams with further recommendations and CAG guidance on implementation of the pause.
Philip Morris International (PMI) letter
PMI has sent letters to NHS trusts with an offer of support to help NHS staff stop smoking.
We consider that NHS organisations working with PMI, a company which is part of the tobacco industry, would be a breach of the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control to which the UK is a signatory. Please do not accept PMI’s offer.

Online collaboration tools: guidance to avoid data breaches
The use of collaboration tools (such as Trello) can be of great benefit, but it is critical these tools are used and configured correctly to protect the data held within. Please do not use third party tools to share personal confidential data.
NHS Digital has created a Good Practice Guide on the safe use of collaboration tools. Please ensure this is read and understood in your organisation and immediately take the necessary steps to ensure tools such as Trello are used securely.
For directors of nursing: Leading Change, Adding Value (LCAV) e-Learning tool
An e-learning tool was launched in March 2018 to support the ongoing implementation of LCAV — the national quality framework for nursing, midwifery and care staff led by NHS England.
The tool includes a series of interactive pages to describe the framework with content to enhance understanding and to help identify and address unwarranted variation. Users can work through the 10 commitments — a description is provided of each commitment, as well as case study examples to bring LCAV to life.
Please share with your colleagues.
