Supporting Royal Surrey County Hospital to improve its finances and reduce waiting times

The trust has agreed a set of actions with us after reviewing what caused its financial position to deteriorate and why some patients continue to wait too long in A&E and to be referred for cancers services.

We've also added a new condition to the trust's licence to provide NHS services. This will enable us to ensure the trust's leadership has the capacity and support to implement necessary changes, quickly and effectively under its new substantive Chief Executive, Paula Head. Paula is joining the trust from Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.

What the trust is doing

The set of actions agreed by the trust include:

  • developing and implementing a robust long term financial recovery plan
  • creating a plan to improve its finances in the short-term, without impacting on patient care
  • obtaining further support from our Emergency Care Intensive Support Team to find ways to reduce waiting times for patients, with the aim of improving the delivery of emergency services
  • making sure the experienced Turnaround Director recently appointed by the trust has the remit and support necessary to ensure financial improvements are delivered
