10 ways for NHS providers to find savings and make cost improvements


We've identified a number of opportunities to help trusts deliver in-year savings, improve their finances and to meet their control totals.

As part of our Financial Improvement Programme, we've been working closely with 16 trusts to tackle the more difficult savings that previous cost improvement programmes have been unable to reach. The programme is expected to save around £50 million in the first year alone.

The opportunities for NHS providers to save are split into two areas: ‘actions that can be quickly delivered’ and longer term ‘different ways of working and service transformation’.

Many of these seem might seem obvious but that doesn’t mean they are being addressed everywhere in the NHS. You might want to make a start by checking whether these are being done in your own trust.
