Clinical guidance for the appropriate and safe exceptional use of superabsorbent polymer gel granules for the containment of bodily waste

This guidance must be read in conjunction with an upcoming National Patient Safety Alert which will recommend these items should either be removed from patient use altogether or restricted to exceptional use only.

We are aware that these items have remained in routine use across the NHS despite a previous Patient Safety Alert and that staff can often believe them to be a requirement of good infection prevention control practice. The purpose of this guidance is to provide information and clarification to support organisations to comply with the actions detailed in the alert.
