Constipation and learning disabilities grab guide

This guide from Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust (BDCFT) intends to raise awareness of constipation as a significant health issue for patients with learning disabilities.

There have been deaths of people with learning disabilities linked to constipation nationally and we aware locally that people are admitted into hospital with constipation related issues. The BDCFT learning disabilities team and continence service want to make sure that people with learning disabilities and carers are aware of how important understanding constipation is.

This guide is for anyone working with and supporting people with learning disabilities, including family members, paid support providers or professionals. It includes information about easy-read guides to support people with learning disabilities themselves and helps support staff understand why constipation is a significant health issue. It includes useful tools such as the Bristol stool chart and easy-read booklet, and explains what support is available to services and people with learning disabilities to manage constipation better.
