Creative emergency department recruitment amid staff shortages

How creative recruitment supported Princess Royal University Hospital's emergency department.

Conducting a skill-mix and establishment review, the Princess Royal University Hospital's emergency department introduced new roles including healthcare support workers and trainee nursing associates to help support the significant staff shortages and high use of temporary staffing.

Engaging with the pipeline of internationally educated nurses that the trust had established alongside the new roles, the department was able to provide support to its new starters and improve recruitment within three months and reduce dependency on agency staff to almost zero.
