This case study shows how Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust reduced healthcare support worker vacancies through development and nursing career opportunities.

Aintree identified that an increase in patient needs year-on-year had caused their agency spend on healthcare assistants (HCAs) to increase significantly. To mitigate this high agency spend and the potential issues with consistency of care that it may cause, the trust implemented a number of new initiatives aimed at HCAs, including opportunities to move into nursing careers, engaging with current HCAs, and a band 3 development programme.
