Elective care: demand and capacity models

A suite of demand and capacity models to help you estimate the capacity needed to run your elective care service.

The national demand and capacity programme is jointly sponsored by NHS England and NHS Improvement.

Our demand and capacity models can be used to help run your elective care services by providing some simple demand and capacity metrics. These tools are generic, and can be applied to all elective, non-overnight services.

You can use these models to inform decision-making and planning, in supporting delivery of timely care to patients.

The models will provide an estimate of:

  • the capacity needed to meet the demand for your service
  • the appropriate size for your waiting list in order to see patients in a timely manner.

This suite of tools builds on the Intensive Support Team (IST)’s demand and capacity models, and is based on the same basic principles.

We are always looking to improve our work. If you have any comments or feedback, please email us at england.demandandcapacityproject@nhs.net
