Emergency Care Workforce Programme

Together with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM), NHS England and Health Education England we've developed a plan to ensure we have sustainable staffing in our emergency departments.

Improving A&E performance is a core priority in the NHS and properly staffed emergency departments are central to this. We know we need more clinical staff to address the significant pressure on our emergency departments.

Securing the future workforce for emergency departments in England PDF, 585.6 KB

A plan to address clinical staff shortages and ensure we have sustainable staffing in our emergency departments.

All partners are committed to this agenda and will work together to ensure its successful delivery. Together these commitments provide a clear plan to grow the workforce, reduce attrition in medical training and ensure emergency departments are attractive places to work.

We believe that this plan sets out a comprehensive package of proposals, supported by the required focus and resource, to ensure a sustainable workforce to meet the growing demands of the future.
