Emergency flow improvement tool

An intuitive data visualisation tool that gives NHS providers extensive information on patient flow through their emergency departments and beyond.

Trialled with 150 staff including 30 acute hospitals, we've developed this tool to help you meet expectations on providing urgent and emergency care, as set out in the NHS Five Year Forward View Next Steps

The tool provides extensive information on patient flow through your emergency departments and allows:

  • you to appreciate and understand where the bottlenecks and strains are within the system and implement plans to tackle them
  • you to use this information to implement plans that can help see and treat patients more quickly
  • leaders and board members to have an overview of their organisation's performance

The tool uses a wide range of existing data sets covering each stage of a patient’s journey so won't create an additional data burden on you. It will also improve the conversations you can have with us to get the tailored support you need.

In this interview Professor Simon Mackenzie outlines how the tool will help trusts identify bottlenecks and stress points and enable them to target their improvement efforts on the areas likely to have the greatest impact.

Following the launch of the tool, we held a webinar which explained its background and how and offered a 'how to use' demonstration.

You can access a recording of the webinar here.

Access the tool via the Model Hospital link above and use these two guides to understand how it works:
