Ensuring unwell newborn babies receive the right care

(1)

Medway NHS Foundation Trust has developed a communication tool to escalate the care of unwell newborn babies between healthcare professionals.

LABOUR (Location, Age, Birth type, Ongoing concerns, Urgency, and Risk factors) is the name of the tool, designed to provide specific and timely information to clinicians so they can deploy appropriate healthcare resources efficiently.

The tool optimises quality and safety in complex maternity systems and is proving to be superior to conventional escalation methods.

The trust has secured Department of Health funding (from the maternity and neonatal safety innovation fund) to develop this tool and hopes it will be adopted by many units after full publicity.
