Executive nurse handbook

A guide for those who aspire to be an executive nurse working effectively at board level, those already in post, and for NHS trusts that want to support and develop this important role.

Executive nurses have a pivotal and transformational role, which is particularly significant as we head into the delivery phase of the NHS Long Term Plan. They navigate a complex set of stakeholders and partners in the service of organisational values and can use their influence at board level to ensure safeguarding, quality of care, patient safety and experience remain the guiding priorities for their organisation.

We have updated this handbook — originally published by The Burdett Trust for Nursing and The King’s Fund — as part of our talent management and development work, building on the priorities of the NHS Long Term Plan. It combines strategic and practical advice with input from executive nurse colleagues.
