‘Gateshead Guardians’ – supporting new starters by involving the experienced workforce


This case study provides a good example of how trusts can ensure that two key groups feel valued — both newly qualified nurses and the more experienced nursing workforce.

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust developed their ‘Gateshead Guardian' scheme to give their longer-serving nurses an opportunity to share experience and advice with nurses just starting out in the profession. In doing so, they made new staff feel more supported while simultaneously making their experienced workforce feel more valued.
