‘Grow your own’ — a proactive approach to retaining nursing staff

This case study shows how Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust developed an approach to 'grow its own' nursing workforce, rather than rely exclusively on recruitment of existing nurses.

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear identified that they would lose a significant number of their registered nurses over the coming years, because they were all reaching ages at which they were eligible for retirement. To mitigate this risk, the trust resolved to ‘grow its own’ workforce by focusing on engaging the local community and making good use of the apprenticeship levy to develop new starters.
