Handover process for junior doctors

As part of their quality improvement project, Medway NHS Foundation Trust implemented an improved handover structure process for junior doctors in orthopaedics.

A robust handover is vital for the safety of patients where shifts rotas are in place, and there is a heavy reliance of bank/ agency staff, to ensure a handover.

The need for an effective handover has been highlighted numerous times by National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) and the NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA). There was no standardised handover process in place for junior doctors in trauma and orthopaedics, and a number of junior doctor vacancies were being covered by agency staff. A standardised approach was required to ensure continuity of care and reduce the chance of errors and improve patients safety.
