Improving mealtimes for long-term inpatients

Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust aimed to improve nutrition and mealtime experiences for people with complex mental illness and dementia on the 16-person Marsden Ward at Monkwearmouth Hospital, Sunderland.

This inpatient ward specialises in long-term care, and its patients’ challenging behaviour is compounded by their significant nutritional requirements and risks associated with swallowing. 

The anxiety and frustration about nutrition and mealtimes negatively affected both staff and patient experience. The whole multidisciplinary team decided to improve nutritional intake, record-keeping and communication, as well as promote wellbeing.
