We've designed this programme to support trusts with the retention of
clinical staff within the NHS, by sharing knowledge and tools to improve
retention locally, and by encouraging trusts to share their good
What is clear to me since we started our retention programme is the real potential in this area — we have seen plenty of examples of trusts massively improving their retention rates across all clinical staff groups by following steps similar to those we outline in this improvement resource."
Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England
Our direct support programme
Trusts participating in our direct programme receive tailored support over a 90-day period to develop or refine their retention improvement plan.
As part of our offer, trusts are provided with a bespoke data pack outlining key turnover data and are buddied-up with one of our dedicated clinical and workforce leads to aid in the development of their plan over the support period.
Trusts attend a launch event to hear of good practice and are provided further details of our programme. Organisations are then offered an introductory call and a subsequent visit.
At the end of the support period trusts are asked to submit a retention plan outlining their target to improve turnover over the next 12 months.
So far, our programme has supported over 140 trusts across four cohorts and will be expanded to offer support to all trusts as part of our aim to improve staff retention nationally within the NHS.
For more information about our programme please email NHSI.Workforce@nhs.net.
As part of our universal support available to all trusts, the programme offers regular retention masterclasses showcasing good practice and trust improvement journeys, as well as access to our improving staff retention resources containing a collection of case studies, useful policies and improvement guides.
While some resources are specific to retaining nursing staff, they are applicable to all staff.
Our joint programme with NHS Employers
We're working in partnership with NHS Employers to support trusts to improve their retention. Using the combined workforce expertise in both organisations, there is a range of resources and materials available across both websites. Where possible the key retention themes have been aligned. You can also find a range of retention resources on NHS Employers website.
We will continue to publish case studies, develop improvement resources and run events and workshops for trusts looking to improve retention. We will also continue to deliver our support programme.
