Listening and responding to staff — a paediatric ward’s retention journey


This case study is about how Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust have been able to reduce vacancy rates and improve retention by actively listening and responding to staff.

After realising their children ward's high vacancy rates were due to issues relating to morale, high agency usage and lack of development and training opportunities, the trust implemented numerous initiatives around actively listening to staff and developing career pathways.

These implementations have helped the trust to significantly reduce vacancy rates, improve appraisal rates and have the highest scoring department in the staff survey.
