Making effective use of staff banks

A toolkit to help trusts maximise the use of staff banks and reduce agency spend.

In July 2017, we surveyed trusts to find out where and how they were using staff banks. While almost every trust has some sort of bank, we know there is further scope to maximise the effectiveness and extend the reach of those banks, in particular into medical banks and collaborative banks, particularly working across sustainability and transformation partnerships.

We have identified a number of common motivations for introducing a collaborative bank.

Based on work with trusts around the country, this toolkit pulls together case studies and key principles for effective bank management. It focuses primarily on managing in-house rather than outsourced banks.

We produced this toolkit to support trusts and sustainability and transformation partnerships by sharing best practice. Senior nursing staff, clinical leaders, medical directors, HR directors and finance directors will find our toolkit particularly useful.
