Matthew's story

Matthew’s story provides a compelling case for improving ambulance handover times, and for changing the behaviours and cultures that contribute to unnecessary waits for patients.

Outlines the importance of effective ambulance handovers and makes recommendations for how NHS providers can improve their processes.

We would like to thank the West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, all the professionals who participated, and most importantly Matthew’s family for taking part in the film.

How can we improve ambulance handover?

Our patient flow guidance sets out our ambitions and core principles for improving ambulance handover times. We want to ensure that patients arriving at the emergency department by ambulance experience a seamless handover without delay, supported by the transfer of patient information from the ambulance to the hospital.
