Reducing length of hospital stays — national discharge patient tracking list (DPTL)

The DPTL supports you to meet our ambition to reduce the proportion of beds occupied by patients who have been in hospital for 21 days or over by 40%, as set out in planning guidance for 2019/20.

Publication of this resource follows a pilot exercise completed with several trusts, testing the DPTL data submission and bringing national visibility to the reasons why patients experience long stays in hospital.

The DPTL falls out of the weekly long stay reviews undertaken at an operational level by staff. A DPTL submission has now been introduced across all trusts.
