Reducing self-harm on mental health inpatient wards

Outlines how Design Thinking (a methodology used by designers to solve complex problems, and find desirable solutions) could help to reduce incidents of self-harm on mental health inpatient wards.

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is part of a collaborative with The Risk Authority Stanford, called the Partnership for Patient Protection, which pairs together leading edge software and Design Thinking methodology to identify and mitigate clinical risks. Feedback is gathered throughout the process in order to refine and iterate.

Four months after implementing the first interventions, the programme is seeing a 43% reduction in the frequency of incidents across project wards.
