Improving staff recruitment and retention in emergency departments

This case study is an excellent example of how offering flexible working can improve retention. It follows the experience of Ben, an emergency department charge nurse at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with a passion for exploring and the outdoors.

By developing an annual hours contract, the trust were able to offer Ben the opportunity to take time away from his usual role and pursue his passion for nursing and travel in extreme locations, including Antarctica, without having to resign and then reapply for his own post.
