Starting conversations during pregnancy

Midwives at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust are using a selection of cards to facilitate a range of antenatal conversations.

Midwives are using a range of cards to start conversations during pregnancy.

The trust recognised it's important to give consistent information to women during pregnancy and that feeding is more successful when women know how to get off to a good start. The series of cards cover the health benefits of breastfeeding, where to get help and support, signs of good feeding and supporting loving relationships regardless of mode of feeding. The cards also cover how to find local support, the importance of vitamin D and the value of breastmilk to preterm infants. As the cards are reusable, they are economical and the text can be added, removed or updated as appropriate.

For women who do not speak English the antenatal conversation cards also help conversations where an interpreter is used. Midwives have very limited time and the cards can help them use their time more effectively.
